Montclair
Montclair is "Where the City Meets the Suburbs," just 12 miles west of Manhattan. Within the town's 6.2 square mile area you will find approximately 40,000 residents, unique heritage, tremendous creative energy and numerous cultural programs. The town features multiple charming shopping areas and many acclaimed restaurants.
Montclair was first formed as a Township on April 15, 1868, from portions of Bloomfield Township so that a railroad could be built to Montclair from New York City. Montclair is located on the First Mountain of the Watchung Mountains, so many locations provide excellent views of the New York City skyline. There are two different main zip codes, the central and southern parts of the town are designated 07042. The portion of town from Watchung north has a separate zip code, 07043, and is known as Upper Montclair.
Montclair hosts many art institution and theaters, and has many art venues. It has its own art museum, the Montclair Art Museum and several small galleries. Montclair also hosts two theaters that showcase first run movies and films. Concerts are also held at the Wellmont Theatre and at several churches and auditoriums sponsored by Outpost in the Burbs, a community-based organization. Montclair has six commercial zones scattered around the town with residential areas in between. There is great shopping and a huge variety of restaurants within the town limits.
Montclair offers recreation in 16 parks including Brookdale Park which borders the towns of Montclair, Bloomfield and Glen Ridge. Brookdale Park hosts many sports activities, art festivals and free summer concerts. Residents enjoy park activities such as jogging, archery, and listening to music under the stars. Three swimming pools (Mountainside, Nishuane and Essex), an indoor ice-skating rink, and twenty-one public tennis courts are also available.
Montclair's unique "Magnet" school system consists of eleven schools in the Montclair School System; seven elementary schools, three middle schools, and one high school. Each of the elementary and middle schools has specialized programs designed to support the individual learning style and interests of each student. Montclair also hosts a large number of private and parochial schools. It is also home to Montclair State University.
Montclair Homes
Montclair homes are well-known for their character and historic charm. Most of Montclair's homes are Colonial, Tudor or Victorian styles and many are unique examples by the top architects of the era. There are also various garden apartment condo conversions, several mid-rise complexes, and multi family homes.
Montclair Commute
Montclair is minutes from Route 3 or the Garden State Parkway, providing access to the George Washington Bridge, Lincoln or Holland Tunnels and Newark Airport. DeCamp buses operate daily to the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Manhattan with a commuting time of around 45 minutes. New Jersey Transit trains provide weekday service to mid-town Manhattan or to Hoboken with connecting PATH service.
Running through Montclair is the Montclair-Boonton Line, which goes between New York City/Hoboken and Hackettstown. There are seven railway stations: Bay Street, Walnut Street, Watchung Avenue, Upper Montclair, Mountain Avenue, and Montclair Heights in Montclair, and Montclair State University Station.
